MARSBAR SLICE RECIPE
This 10-minute recipe is rich in flavour with its sweet and crunchy chocolate rice bubble base and milk choc topping.
You don’t need any fancy equipment to make this slice. All you need is a microwave, stovetop or Thermomix, and a bowl. That’s it!
What do you need?
5 ingredients are all you need:
- butter can be used – unsalted or salty butter.
- Mars Bars are chocolate bars made by Mars with layers of nougat, caramel, and milk chocolate.
- Rice bubbles (or any other puffed rice) are also known as rice Krispies.
- golden syrup is a common baking ingredient in Australia. It is a sticky sweet, thin and light treacle. You can substitute golden syrup for honey, corn syrup or maple syrup if you don’t have access to it in your local supermarket.
- Milk chocolate – Choose high-quality cooking chocolate that melts easily when heated. I prefer Nestle or Cadbury cooking chocolates or melts.
- Coconut oil or vegetable oil is an optional step, but it will make it easier to cut the chocolate once it has been set.
STEP 1 – MELT
Cut the Mars Bars in small pieces. Add the butter and golden syrup to the bowl and heat in the microwave at low heat.
Not all Mars Bars will melt completely. They will remain a bit chunky, which gives the slices a wonderful texture and flavor.
STEP 2: MIX
Mix the remaining Mars Bar pieces with the rice bubbles (rice Krispies) and stir well using a metal spoon. It will become sticky because the liquid will coat the rice bubbles.
STEP 3: PRESS INTO TIN
To get the perfect Mars Bar slice, press the mixture into a rectangular baking paper-lined slice tin (approximately 18.3 x 22.2 cm).
You can either press the mixture down using a round glass, or place a small tin on top. Press down until no rice bubbles remain.
STEP 4: ADD THE MELTEDCHOCOLATE
The microwave, stovetop or in a Thermomix can be used to melt the chocolate.
STEP 5: REFRIGERATE
Before you cut the slice, let it cool in the refrigerator.
If you have the time, leave it in the fridge overnight before cutting. You can refrigerate it for 3-4 hours if you are short on time.
RECIPE TIPS
- Melt butter, golden syrup, and Mars Bars on the stove-top, in the microwave, or in a Thermomix.
- Use a new box of rice bubbles to ensure that your slice is crisp and crunchy
- The Mars Bars won’t melt completely, but they will still remain in small pieces – this is fine. It gives the slice its classic chunky texture.
- Pour the mixture into a lined and greased baking pan. To ensure that the mixture doesn’t separate when cut, you need to press down on it very hard.
- To prevent milk chocolate from cracking , you can add vegetable oil or coconut oil to it.
- Allow to cool in the refrigerator for at least 3-4 hours (overnight works best).
- Let the chocolate soften slightly in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before you cut.
- Use a small, serrated knife to cut through the chocolate layer and then through the rice bubbles layer.
