The ultimate crowd-pleaser is our slow cooker version of the easiest chili con carne.
Why does a slow cooker make chili better? The most delicious chili con carnes are simmered on low heat. A slow cook allows all the flavors to mix and mingle. Low temperature also keeps the meat tender. You don’t need to stir it like you would on a stove so that you can get on with other things. Win, win!
Why must I fry all ingredients before adding them to the dish?
You can put all of the ingredients in a slow cooker, but the result won’t be a flavorsome chili. You’ll get more flavor from the chili if you fry the ingredients and turn them golden.
Why is my chili con carne bland?
To bring out the full flavor of chili (or other tomato-based dishes like Bolognese), you need to season it generously. Don’t be shy with the coriander.
Why would adding chocolate to a chili be a good idea
In Mexico, chocolate is added to savory Mole. It adds a rich and slightly sweet flavor while also making the sauce’s texture super-silky. It’s optional, but it enhances the taste of the chili.
How can I make my chili hotter?
Use a fresh red chili to increase the heat. If you like things hotter, you can put the chili in with the tomatoes and let it cook slowly. The chili’s heat will increase during cooking.
How do you freeze chili?
It’s best to cool it down after cooking in step 3 and then freeze before adding the final touches since the herbs and beans don’t do well in the freezing. Tip into a large container. Defrost the day before serving in the refrigerator, and then heat the mixture in a saucepan until it begins to bubble.
The perfect slow-cooker chili is versatile. Serve it with rice or use it as a filling for tacos and burritos. Layer it with tortillas, cheese, sour cream, and sour cream in a roasting pan to make Mexican lasagne. Or top it with a layer of cheesy potatoes and jalapeno peppers to make Chilli Con Carne Cottage Pie.
Directions
- Step 1
- In a large skillet, heat 1 tbsp oil and cook the beef until it is well browned. Stirring to break any lumps will help. Transfer the meat from the pan to the slow cooker using a slotted spatula (don’t start the oven yet).
- Step 2
- Fry the onions for 10 minutes or until they are soft.
- Step 3
- Add the spices, fry for 1 minute, and then add the tomato purée, hot Stock, and the tomatoes. Stir the mixture carefully into the mince. Bring the mixture to a boil and then add it to the slow cooker. Cover and cook at low for 4-5hrs.
- Step 4
- Add the kidney beans, coriander, and chocolate. Season with black pepper and salt, and turn off the stove. Let it stand for about 10 minutes.
- Step 5
- Serve with Guacamole or Salsa. Also, serve with tortilla chips, pickled chilies, soured cream, and grated cheese.
