This savory sesame recipe is all about the toasted sesame oils. This magical ingredient is a must-try! This toasty oil adds a wonderful, nutty flavor to any dish. This oil is a finishing oil, so it should be drizzled on your food after cooking.

WHERE TO FIND TOASTED SESAME OIL

You’ll need to pay attention to the label when you buy toasted sesame oils. Sesame oil is either un-toasted or regular. It has a straw-like color similar to canola oil and a mildly nutty taste. Toasted sesame oils have a dark amber color with a strong nutty aroma and flavor. Oil is usually sold in glass bottles. Simply look at the color to determine if it’s the right oil.

Un-toasted sesame oils are often sold close to other cooking oils. Toasted sesame oil can be found in major grocery stores’ international aisle. This ingredient is growing in popularity in the U.S., so Aldi and Trader Joe’s now carry their brand at a very affordable price. This oil is very affordable. A little goes a long way with it. This oil will last quite a while.

DO I HAVE to USE JASMINE RICE?

You can use regular long-grain white rice, but jasmine rice has more flavor. For a great deal on jasmine rice, avoid the small “specialty” containers and instead look at the bottom shelf for a large 5-lb. bag. You’ll be able to use the 5 lbs. in no time!

WHAT TO SERVE WITH THE SAME RICE

Sesame rice is a great side dish for any Southeast Asian-inspired meal. It can be served alongside Soy Glazed Eggplant or Easy Sesame Chicken. INGREDIENTS

  • 1 clove of garlic ($0.08)
  • 1 Tbsp butter ($0.13)
  • 1 cup long-grain jasmine rice ($0.67)
  • 1.75 cups of water ($0.00).
  • 1 Tbsp soy sauce ($0.06)
  • 1/2 Tbsp toasted sesame oil ($0.15)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds ($0.02)

INSTRUCTIONS

  • Add the minced garlic to a medium saucepan with the butter. Sauté the garlic on medium heat for about 1-2 minutes or until it becomes soft and fragrant.
  • Stir the rice into the pot. Continue to cook the rice for 2-3 minutes to toast it.
  • Add the soy sauce and water to the pot. Could you give it a quick stir to combine? Cover the pot with a lid and bring it to a boil. After boiling, turn down the heat and allow it to simmer for 15 minutes.
  • After 15 minutes, turn off the heat and allow the rice to rest for five minutes. After five minutes, take off the lid and fluff the rice with a fork. Add the sesame oils to the top. Then, fold the rice gently until all the seeds and sesame oils are evenly distributed. Serve warm.
